Day 38: A Lesson on Moksha (Surrender)
Moon in Purva Ashada/Sagittarius + Krishna Ashtami (8th day)
The end is near of this particular 40-day practice container.
Today is the 8th day of the waning lunar cycle. 8th is always about transformation and surrender. Letting go.
Those with strong 8th houses or born on the 8th lunar day know about surrender. They are being called to this lesson over and over again. My Jupiter is in the 8th house, indicating part of my mission and work is to teach surrender and transformation, but only through my own journey.
In other words, I know about this particular type of suffering.
In order to let go, you have to first be really attached to something. Is there even a reason to surrender if there is not attachment?
We learn this from the beginning.
An egg and a sperm come together, attach and merge to make one. We’re on our way.
We become one with mother, her karma is our karma at this point. We are incubating.
Then comes the day to surrender, maybe even reluctantly. Do we remember we chose this?
We are born. A cord is cut. We take a breath. We begin mitigating and accumulating our own karma and recognizing who we are and what we are here to do, in the reflection of the world. It’s a first surrender of sorts, at least in this particular trajectory.
Then there are a multitudes of other surrenders we get to practice. Our 4th house in our natal chart reflects that next big surrender, this is the place of our astrological heart, our emotional security and sense of safety that we {hopefully} developed with our mother, but now it is time to let go, surrender our dependency on mother and take the steps into our purpose, our mission. Dare we?
Then on we go, developing this independent {or co-dependent} personality, in the world, stepping into purpose, creating family and relationships and one day we meet up with our 8th house, our place of transformation, through surrender, we gain inheritances from our ancestors. But we need to honor them first, bring them back into our lives through recognition of their struggles, their hopes, their dreams. We abandoned them as we went about to be our own person, and here in the 8th we are asked to honor and see what their struggles were.
And rewrite that story.
And then we surrender so we can cross into that next growth stage of interdependence. We cross into the 9th house of our highest truth and then learn to take that into action, have high ambitions, healing and all leads us to 12th house, the last house of surrender and letting go. This is the place where we take steps towards our next life. Or the afterlife. Whatever that is. The unknown.
It will be the ultimate act of surrender that we face in this lifetime. The rest of these surrenders are practice for that time which is coming.
We practice in Savasana, the corpse pose, at the end of a yoga stretch class.
We practice when we sleep at night, many fight this.
Learning to let go, even of spiritual practice, is a hard thing. We tend to think the “thing” is it. Eventually we are all going to learn was about loosening the grip and surrendering. Mom always told me, “Let go and let God.”
